Lavender & Your Brain: What the Science Says

My husband grew up in Germany knowing lavender the way you know something that has always been there. His mother kept it in the linen cupboard; dried bunches tucked between the sheets so that every bed in the house smelled faintly of it. When he was restless as a child, she would rub a little lavender oil into his temples and the back of his neck — not as medicine exactly, but as instinct. Something her mother had done, and her mother before that. A thread of quiet knowledge passed down through generations of European households long before anyone put it in a clinical trial.
When he became a father himself, he did not think twice about continuing it. A few drops in the diffuser at bath time. A lavender candle burning in the living room while the children wound down for the evening. The same unhurried ritual his mother had given him, now given to his own family. And it was his suggestion — offered one evening with the quiet certainty of someone who has never doubted this particular thing — that we try pairing lavender with sage. He had read that sage carried its own calming properties; and together, he thought, they would be something more grounded, more complex than lavender alone.
He was right. Why smell reaches your brain before anything else does
Of all five senses, smell is the only one with a direct pathway to your brain's emotional centre. When you inhale a scent, odour molecules travel immediately to the olfactory bulb, which connects almost instantly to the limbic system; the part of your brain responsible for emotion, memory, and stress response.
Every other sense — sight, sound, touch, taste — passes through the thalamus first, the brain's relay station. Scent bypasses it entirely. This is why a familiar smell can pull you back to a specific moment before your conscious mind has caught up; it is not nostalgia so much as neurology.
It also means that the effects of aromatherapy are not imaginary or placebo. They are structural, occurring at the level of brain chemistry and nervous system function. And they begin within seconds of inhalation.
What lavender's compounds do once they reach your brain
Lavender essential oil contains more than 100 chemical compounds, but two do most of the neurological work: linalool and linalyl acetate.
A 2023 neuroscience review published in Heliyon (Bavarsad et al., Hamadan University of Medical Sciences) confirmed that both compounds interact directly with GABA-A receptors in the brain; the same receptors targeted by anti-anxiety medications like diazepam, but without the dependency risks associated with those pharmaceuticals.¹
GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is your brain's primary "calm down" neurotransmitter. It reduces neuronal excitability, essentially instructing your nervous system to lower its volume. When linalool activates these receptors, the effects are measurable: reduced anxiety, slower heart rate, quieter nervous system response.
A separate body of research (PMC, 2017) found that lavender and linalool also bind to the serotonin transporter (SERT), which regulates mood and emotional resilience; the same pathway targeted by many antidepressants.² This dual action on both the GABA and serotonin systems is part of what makes lavender consistently effective across different types of stress.
What about sage? Research published in Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Behaviour found that common sage (Salvia officinalis) has measurable effects on mood, memory, and anxiety, with compounds that also interact with neurotransmitter systems including acetylcholine and GABA. Paired with lavender, sage adds a grounding, clarifying quality that balances lavender's softness; which is precisely what my husband was reaching for when he suggested the combination. It is not a decorative pairing. There is chemistry behind it.
The cortisol connection
When you are under sustained pressure, your body releases cortisol, the primary stress hormone. In short bursts, cortisol is useful. Chronically elevated, it contributes to poor sleep, immune suppression, weight changes, and compounding anxiety; the kind of slow accumulation that many of us carry without fully realising how heavy it has become.
This is where the research becomes particularly compelling.
A 2022 clinical study found that thirty days of lavender oil inhalation significantly reduced perceived stress scores and cortisol levels, with participants showing measurable increases in heart rate variability (HRV); a key indicator that the parasympathetic nervous system has taken over from the stress response.³ A systematic review and meta-analysis published in Phytomedicine, drawing on 21 studies with over 1,000 participants, concluded that lavender aromatherapy reduces sympathetic nervous system activity and increases parasympathetic activity; the shift from fight-or-flight into genuine rest.⁴
This is the mechanism behind why you feel different after an evening in a lavender-scented room. Your nervous system is not imagining it; it is responding to real chemical signals, exactly as those generations of European grandmothers suspected it would.
The sequence, step by step
When lavender enters through inhalation, research suggests this is what unfolds: linalool and linalyl acetate are absorbed through the olfactory pathway and reach their peak in the bloodstream within minutes. They activate GABA receptors, reducing neuronal excitability. The amygdala — your brain's threat-detection centre — becomes less reactive. Cortisol production decreases; heart rate and blood pressure follow. The parasympathetic nervous system takes over, and the body begins to do what it has been waiting all day to do: rest.
The 2024 Journal of Medical Signals and Sensors study found that even a single session of lavender inhalation improved attentional performance and reduced anxiety markers in healthy adults.⁵ A 2025 Frontiers in Pharmacology study confirmed lavender's well-established anxiolytic, antidepressant, and sleep-promoting properties, noting that clinical evidence continues to build.⁶
Why what you burn, wear and use matters
Not all lavender exposure produces the same result, and this is worth being direct about.
The research above is based on inhaled lavender; volatilised compounds entering the body through the nose. This is the most direct route to the olfactory system and the limbic structures that respond to scent. The research suggests that consistency amplifies the effect. A single exposure to lavender produces measurable results; repeated exposure, associated with the same time of day or the same sequence of actions, trains the nervous system to respond more readily. This is the principle behind the rituals my husband grew up with: not grand gestures, but small consistent ones.
